Q: What is the story behind Lafayette Avenue Ceramics?

Lafayette Avenue is a little street right next to the ocean in New Jersey where my family is from. After art school, I was inspired to start my business making functional dishware and kitchenware to bring people together. My goal is to bring families back into the kitchen where they can create healthy, beautiful home cooked meals for one another; and my ceramics are designed to last a life time.

Q: What is your favorite item you’ve made so far?

My citrus juicers! Not only are they fun to make (they're actually made up of 6 different pieces) but I think they are the most functional. I love the way they actually work as a kitchen tool.

Q: What makes your pieces special and unique?

I use a porcelaneous clay which gives a clean, white look. I also create all of my glazes using recipes I perfected while in college. This gives a unique look that is both colorful and vibrant while still being simple and clean. Also, each item is made individually so they all have a little bit of a different shape and size that makes them all one-of-a-kind.

Q: What inspires you?

Im inspired by memories of family gatherings, lazy Sunday mornings, coastal landscape and the clay itself.

Q: What is your favorite part about Phoenix?

Summer time. I know its crazy, but I love the heat! I'm also obsessed with the landscape. Coming from the East Coast where we have lots of trees and leaves, its nice to see the wide open spaces, gorgeous sunsets and the surprisingly clean look of cacti and succulents.

Q: What’s your favorite Phoenix area local hot spot?

Have you tried the food at Virtu in Old Town Scottsdale? Chef Gio frequently creates new seasonal menu items using local ingredients. They also have some amazing cocktails!
